The VerIoT Project: Elevating RFID and NFC Production Standards through Sustainable Innovation

The VerIoT project, led by CISC Semiconductor GmbH in close collaboration with Lambda ID, recently concluded, successfully pioneering new standards in RFID/NFC production. This project aligns with the European Union’s measures introduced in March 2022 to reduce electronic waste (e-waste) and enhance transparency with the unveiling of a digital product passport. Funded by SiliconEurocluster and supported by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), VerIoT has made substantial strides toward sustainable production and supply chain transparency.

CISC Semiconductor GmbH: Leading with AI-Driven Quality Assurance

CISC Semiconductor GmbH was pivotal in the technological advancements of the VerIoT project. Utilizing its deep expertise in RFID technology, CISC developed AI-driven tools for quality assurance and predictive maintenance. These innovations ensured that the RFID/NFC labels met the highest standards of quality and efficiency, contributing to the goals of the EU’s digital product passport initiative by providing transparent and traceable product labeling solutions.

Lambda ID GmbH: Enhancing Supply Chain Sustainability

Lambda ID GmbH’s role in the VerIoT project focused on enhancing the sustainability of the supply chain. Their efforts concentrated on developing methods to increase the reusability and recyclability of transport items. By integrating RFID technology into Returnable Transport Items (RTIs), Lambda ID extended their usability and significantly minimized the associated waste, aligning with the EU’s objectives to combat e-waste and promote a circular economy.

Making an Impact and Setting New Standards

Together, CISC and Lambda ID did more than just meet existing standards—they pushed forward new ones. Their collaboration led to the creation of a testbed for green digital product passports, proving that high-tech production can be environmentally friendly. The success of VerIoT has prompted a rethinking of what’s possible in RFID/NFC technology, influencing industry regulations and inspiring future tech innovations.

What’s Next?

As the VerIoT project closes, the dialogue it started about sustainable technology is only getting louder. CISC Semiconductor is already exploring how further innovations in AI can enhance production sustainability and continues to refine the integration of RFID technology into sustainable supply chains.
